Linkou CGMH Department of Laboratory Medicine was the first in Taiwan to obtain CAP accreditation (2003) and received the National Biotech Medical Quality Gold Award (Hospital Specialty Group) in 2004. Established in 1999, the Virus Detection Center integrates BSL-2 and BSL-3 labs with Taiwan's most comprehensive cell/virus library (>100 strains), 43 molecular tests (identifying 200+ viral genotypes), 10 antigen tests, and 35 antibody tests. SARS-CoV-2 PCR launched 2020/1/21—the first batch lab; total tests 307,327, including airport surveillance (peak 2,026/day, 100% 24-hour turnaround). Three high-throughput platforms (Cobas 6800/8800, Alinity m—Taiwan's first) enable 5,800 tests/day. Innovations: (1) in-house AI sample-recognition system (150,000 system-wide electronic verifications/month); (2) whole-genome sequencing tracking viral evolution, 90 entries uploaded to GISAID; (3) real-time S-protein variant sequencing; (4) validated 5 manufacturers' PCR kits; led MVC vaccine Phase I/II trials (Lancet Respir Med IF 30.7); (5) world-first quantitative neutralizing antibody ELISA technology-transferred. COVID-19 culture positive rate 62.5%—world #1. Published 304 viral papers; remote training for 40 students from 9 Latin American/Caribbean allies.
