Description

The international microtia center was established in 2001. Here, we offer the use of autologous costal cartilage as well as the use of alloplastic porous polyethylene for framework creation. More uniquely, we offer the combination method, which involves the use of costal cartilage for framework creation then the use of porous polyethylene for projection. Furthermore, we are able to perform bone-conduction hearing aid implantation and auricular reconstruction in a single stage; thereby decreasing the number of surgeries necessary. In addition, we train surgical fellows from around the world and hold international conferences annually. Nowadays, we are able to customize ear frameworks for each patient by creating mirror image design of the contralateral normal ear with the use of 3D simulation software.

Key Highlights

  • Unrivaled Clinical Volume: Large volume for microtia and external ear reconstruction surgeries.

  • Multiple Techniques: Able to offer autologous costal cartilage framework and alloplastic porous polyethylene framework, as well as combination method, which involves the use of both costal cartilage and porous polyethylene for auricular framework reconstruction.

  • Single-Stage Auricular and Hearing Reconstruction: Offering a revolutionary "all-in-one" single surgery that simultaneously addresses both external ear reconstruction and functional hearing restoration with bone-conduction hearing aid implantation.

  • 3D Digital Simulation & Customization: Utilizing cutting-edge 3D surgical simulation and digital planning to design fully customized, anatomically precise ear frameworks tailored uniquely to each patient.

  • Taiwan’s Pioneer in Microtia Digital Resource: Established the nation's very first Microtia Web Portal, which provides comprehensive, evidence-based patient education and support for families worldwide.

Service Data

  • Total Ear Reconstruction Cases: 2,227 patients successfully treated. Domestic (Taiwan): 1,817 patients. International (Mainland China & Global): 410 patients (including 392 from Mainland China).

  • Annual Outpatient Volume: Averaging approximately 1,200 patient visits per year for specialized craniofacial and ear consultations.

  • Annual Reconstructive Surge: Completing an average of 130 complex ear reconstruction surgeries annually, maintaining one of the highest volumes globally.

  • Global Footprint: Welcoming an average of 30 international medical travel patients each year who fly in specifically for our world-renowned surgical expertise.

  • Autologous Rib Cartilage Reconstruction: Chosen by 1,388 patients (62.3%), utilizing the patient's own tissue for a natural, lifetime result.

  • Alloplastic Porous Polyethylene Reconstruction: Chosen by 839 patients (37.7%), utilizing advanced biomaterials to reduce donor-site intervention and shorten recovery.

  • Measurable Hearing Improvement: Patients undergoing this combined procedure achieved an average increase of 16.4% in their Speech Discrimination Scores (SDS), vastly improving their daily communication, language development, and quality of life.

Featured Outcomes

  • Clinical Success & Revision-Free Rate: 100% Unlike other intricate craniofacial conditions (such as cleft lip and palate) that may require staged, multi-phase interventions, ear reconstruction generally requires fewer steps. However, individual anatomical variations can often necessitate secondary revisions in standard clinical settings. Out of the 416 surgical patients treated from 2020 to 2022, zero (0) patients required a secondary revision surgery, achieving an exceptional clinical success rate with outstanding patient satisfaction.

  • Surgical Site Infection (SSI) Rate: 0% From 2020 to 2022, zero (0) cases of surgical site infections were recorded among our ear reconstruction patient cohort, demonstrating our flawless adherence to world-class infection control and sterile operating protocols.

  • Postoperative Complication Rate: 0% Throughout the same three-year period (2020–2022), zero (0) patients experienced any major postoperative complications, underscoring the superior safety profiles and predictable prognoses delivered by our surgical team.

Safety Outcomes

  • Zero Patient Safety Adverse Events (0%) From 2020 to 2022, our center recorded zero (0) patient safety incidents or adverse event reports, underscoring the strength of our proactive risk management and clinical warning systems.

  • Zero Wrong-Site Surgery Events (0%) Adhering to impeccable universal protocols for surgical pause and verification, zero (0) wrong-site, wrong-procedure, or wrong-patient surgical events occurred between 2020 and 2022.

  • Zero Escalated Patient Grievances (0%) Throughout the same three-year period (2020–2022), there were zero (0) negative patient feedback reports or official complaints logged via the Presidential Mailbox, reflecting the exceptional communication, empathy, and care provided by our frontline clinical team.
