Established in 1976 as the first Craniofacial Center in Taiwan, we are deeply committed to driving patient-centered care, interdisciplinary synergy, and groundbreaking global clinical and translational research. As a world-leading, high-volume center of excellence, we have treated more than 30,000 patients with cleft lip and palate and actively care for over 5,000 complex craniofacial cases. Ranking No. 1 in Taiwan for market share and surgical volume, our center performs nearly 3,000 cleft surgeries, manages approximately 200 newborns with craniofacial conditions, and completes nearly 500 orthognathic surgeries annually.
Taiwan’s Pioneer Craniofacial Center: Founded in 1976, establishing the nation's benchmark for craniofacial medicine.
The Undisputed leader: Ranked #1 in Taiwan, commanding the largest patient volume and surgical experience for complex craniofacial and orthognathic procedures.
International Training Hub: Recognized globally as a premier center for advanced plastic surgery training, observation, and clinical fellowships.
Integrated Multi-Specialty Care Team: A seamless network of experts working in unison, including Craniofacial Surgeons, Craniofacial Orthodontists/Dentists, Speech-Language Pathologists, Clinical Psychologists, Social Workers, and specialized Craniofacial Nurses.
Standardized Care Pathways: Built upon robust, standardized medical care protocols and evidence-based clinical pathways to ensure maximum patient safety and predictable outcomes.
World-Leading Cleft Care: Successfully treated over 30,000 patients with cleft lip and palate, with more than 5,000 patients actively undergoing long-term care.
Unrivaled Surgical Volume: Performing nearly 3,000 cleft surgeries and nearly 500 orthognathic surgeries annually, ranking No. 1 in Taiwan for both complex procedures.
The Go-To Center for Newborns: Managing nearly 200 newborns with craniofacial conditions per year, commanding the highest market share in Taiwan.
Global Humanitarian Impact (1998–2009): Spearheaded 55 international medical missions, performing life-changing surgeries for 1,285 underprivileged patients worldwide.
International Knowledge Export: Trained 346 international fellowship doctors from 43 countries (1984–2009) and cultivated 90 medical seed professionals worldwide (2000–2008). Over 900 international plastic surgeons have visited our center for clinical observations.
High-Impact Research Output:
From 1970 to 2008, published 341 papers, with 158 indexed in SCI (46.3%).
Accelerated research focus from 2004 to 2008 with 86 papers, raising the SCI ratio to 54.7% (47 papers).
Competitive Research Grants: Secured 49 prestigious academic research projects between 1984 and 2008.
Presidential Commendations (2006–August 2009): The hospital's executive office received 132 official positive feedback letters from grateful patients praising our frontline teams:
Attending Physicians: 55 commendations
Nursing Staff: 52 commendations
Nurse Practitioners (NPs): 25 commendations
Significant Reduction in Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV): Through a targeted clinical pathway intervention, our PONV rate dropped dramatically from 29.9% to 8.67% (a absolute reduction of -21.23%).
Strict Surgical Site Marking: Implemented standardized operating procedures for mandatory universal surgical site marking to ensure zero-error patient safety.
Comprehensive Pre-Anesthetic Assessment: 100% execution of rigorous pre-anesthetic visits to optimize patient preparation and minimize intraoperative risks.
Equipment Quality Assurance: Formulated standardized guidelines for advanced surgical instrument maintenance and care to preserve sterilization excellence.
Innovative Craniofacial Cold-Compress Band: Our self-developed, patented post-op ice pack system significantly boosted patient experience across all dimensions (measured on a 5-point scale):
Overall Satisfaction: 4.3 (an increase of $\uparrow$ 0.9)
Convenience: 4.4 (an increase of $\uparrow$ 1.2)
Comfort: 4.2 (an increase of $\uparrow$ 0.6)
Enhanced Compliance: Increased the average localized cold-compress application time within 3 days post-surgery to 16 hours (an increase of $\uparrow$ 1.7 hours), optimizing swelling reduction.
The Pinnacle of Plastic Surgery Global Leadership
ASPS Global Icons: The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS)—the world's most authoritative body in the field—has historically selected only 30 global plastic surgery pioneers. Our institution holds three of these legendary spots: Dr. Samuel Noordhoff, Dr. Yu-Ray Chen, and Dr. Fu-Chan Wei.
Prestigious Institutional Milestones
1996: Dr. Samuel Noordhoff and the team won the Best Educational Video Award from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) for their definitive video on "Unilateral Cleft Lip Repair."
1999: Signed an MOU with Singapore General Hospital (SGH) to launch the landmark Asian Cleft-Craniofacial Multinational Research Project.
2004: Partnered with The Johns Hopkins University (USA) to conduct a groundbreaking international genetic epidemiological study on cleft lip and palate.
2006: The medical team was awarded the prestigious Certificate of Distinguished Guests of Honor by Moca, Dominican Republic.
Redefining Global Cleft Care Protocols: Our 1995 publication on Furlow Palatoplasty won the Best Paper Award from the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA). This research permanently changed the global treatment paradigm for Velopharyngeal Insufficiency (VPI), and its concepts are now the mainstream standard of care across North America.
Pioneering "Distraction Osteogenesis": Our 2001 study on "Segmental Maxillary Distraction Osteogenesis via Tooth-Borne Device" was honored with the Best Paper Award by the ACPA.
World-First Surgical Milestones: Successfully orchestrated the world’s very first multi-specialty integrated surgical intervention (combining Radiology, Plastic Surgery, Microsurgery, Craniofacial Surgery, and Ophthalmology) to treat highly complex Neurofibromatosis tumors.
Global Capacity Building: Actively assisted in the foundation and development of fully functional craniofacial centers in South Africa, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines, China, and Indonesia.
Authoring Medical Literature: Our faculty has been repeatedly invited to write definitive chapters for multiple leading international plastic surgery textbooks.
Digital Patient Education: Pioneered the digitalization of patient education through the specialized Craniofacial Center and Craniofacial Orthodontics web portals.
