Target Population

We care for ventilator users, deliver tiered healthcare, and facilitate downward referrals to chronic wards, serving as a strong pillar for neighboring hospitals via a medical mutual-aid network.

Description

The Respiratory Therapy Team of the Department of Chest Medicine at Fu Jen Catholic University Hospital embraces medical evangelism, academic research, medical education, and teamwork as its core service philosophies. We are dedicated to building a pioneering team in acute and critical respiratory care to provide professional respiratory therapy.

Our team operates under three fundamental pillars: Revolutionary
Reliable
Teamwork

Through innovative and diverse care models, driven by a professional and compassionate spirit, we support patients and their families while providing timely discharge referral information to ensure seamless care transitions. We continually present academic research posters, cultivate respiratory therapy talents, and showcase teaching and academic achievements. Actively engaging in interdisciplinary collaboration focused on enhancing patient welfare, we deliver comprehensive, high-quality respiratory care plans, optimize the quality of care for ventilator-reliant individuals, and strive to remain a pioneer in respiratory care.

Key Highlights

  • Advanced Ventilation Modes: We continuously promote Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist (NAVA). By monitoring diaphragmatic electrical activity, we tailor personalized, precise strategies from the acute to recovery phase, reducing work of breathing, facilitating early rehabilitation, and accelerating weaning.

  • Innovative Rehabilitation: Utilizing diverse therapeutic training models, we customize individual rehabilitation plans for difficult-to-wean patients. Promoting early mobility and ambulation effectively shortens hospital stays, increases weaning success rates, and helps patients return to normal life sooner.

  • Smart Healthcare Integration: Incorporating smart medical technologies, we implement project-based management with an intuitive, visualized dashboard for critically ill ventilator patients. This provides targeted care recommendations, optimizes resource allocation, safeguards safety, and reduces both ICU length of stay and mortality.

  • Regional Cooperative Networks: We are deeply committed to developing a regional alliance for respiratory therapy, serving as a steadfast pillar for neighboring regional hospitals and chronic respiratory care facilities.

Service Data

  • International-Caliber ARDS Care: For moderate-to-severe ARDS, our patients exhibit an average intubated ventilator duration of 18.0 days and a mortality rate of 39.2%, on par with medical centers and meeting international standards.

  • Extensive Clinical Experience: Since 2017, we have served over 1,000 ventilator patients. With innovative techniques and integrated care, the average ICU ventilator duration has been optimized to 7.6 days.

  • Vertical & Horizontal Integration: Through integrated care and mutual aid, we help unweanable patients transition smoothly to chronic wards. Combining holistic and spiritual care, we reduce ICU demand and family logistical burdens; our rate of ICU stays exceeding 21 days is just 5.6%.

  • One-Stop Digital Health Interface: We launched the official Line account, "FJUH Breath Care — One-Stop Integrated Care Zone." This platform bridges traditional education and family meetings, allowing families to contact clinical windows and access help anytime, anywhere, reducing staff burden and enhancing interaction.

  • SDM for Tracheostomy: We implement early shared decision-making (SDM) for tracheostomies. Supported by case-sharing and educational videos, our consent rate reaches 71%, improving patient quality of life and long-term care management.

  • Tiered Healthcare: We serve as a strong backbone for neighboring clinics and respiratory hospitals, establishing a support network to safeguard the health of residents in Xinzhuang, Wugu, and Taishan.

Featured Outcomes

  • Superior ICU Mortality Rates: Patients with APACHE II scores between 15 and 29 account for approximately 60% of our ICU admissions. Notably, the ventilator utilization rate in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) reaches up to 70%, yet the average mortality rate is kept at 9.3%, which outperforms peer hospitals.

  • Outstanding Weaning Success: Our mechanical ventilator weaning success rate is 64.7%, a figure superior to benchmarks published in international medical journals.

  • Robust Academic Contributions: The proportion of our team members serving as the first author or corresponding author in journal papers and poster presentations exceeds 20%, significantly surpassing the 10% standard required by Taiwan’s official teaching hospital accreditation.

  • Award-Winning Quality Control Circles: We established the interdisciplinary Quality Control Circle (QCC) named "The Resplendent Circle." Targeting the topic "Reducing the Duplication Rate of Inhaled Medications in Inpatients," the team implemented structured improvement strategies. Consequently, the duplication rate of inhaled medications dropped from 16% to 12.6%. This initiative successfully minimized drug side effects, reduced medical waste by approximately 1 kg, and cut unnecessary medication expenditures by NT$6,780. This project was honored with the Award of Merit in the 【Theme-Based Category】 at the 2025 National Healthcare Quality Award (NHQA).

Safety Outcomes

  • High-Volume Critical Care Management: The ventilator utilization rate in our intensive care units is higher than that of peer hospitals, with ventilator-dependent individuals accounting for 65% of the total ICU patient population.

  • Accredited Excellence: The institution officially passed the Regional Hospital Accreditation in May 2023.

Satisfaction

Validated Care Quality: Our innovative, multi-dimensional therapeutic training and rehabilitation models have received high praise and affirmation from both patients and their families.

International Achievements

  • Prestigious International Presentations: In 2019, our team traveled abroad to deliver an oral presentation of our research findings at the European Respiratory Society (ERS) International Congress—an elite honor achieved by only five medical professionals from Taiwan that year.

  • Smart Healthcare Recognition: Earned the First Prize / Champion Award in the Acute and Critical Smart Healthcare Competition.

  • Outstanding Academic Presentations: Awarded the First-Class Academic Prize for Best Case Study Oral Presentation at the Annual Meeting of Critical Care Medicine.

  • Domestic Technical Awards: Earned First-Class Awards and Awards of Merit for poster presentations at the Taiwan Society for Respiratory Therapy annual conference.

  • National Quality Honors: Received the Award of Merit in the 【Theme-Based Category】 at the 2025 National Healthcare Quality Award (NHQA).

Benefits and Impacts

  • Knowledge Transfer and Leadership: Using NAVA as a primary clinical focus, we have organized 2 national symposia, 1 hands-on workshop, and 3 cross-institutional lectures and exchange programs across healthcare facilities in Taiwan.

  • Interdisciplinary Academic Publications: Collaborating closely with medical physicians, our team has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to both adult and pediatric respiratory care fields.

  • Broad Research Footprint: Our published contributions span critical care medicine, pulmonary rehabilitation, pulmonary infections, respiratory therapy equipment, and innovative instructional tools.
