Hospital-wide units
Inpatients and outpatients
Physicians, pharmacists, and nursing staff
This project focuses on innovation and transformation in medication management and utilization systems. By integrating pharmaceutical and information technology expertise, we established a comprehensive framework that includes a medication inventory management system, a drug warehouse operation management system, a Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) system, and a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS). These initiatives enhance medication management efficiency while improving overall medication safety.
First hospital in Taiwan to introduce an automated drug warehouse management system
Web-based Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) system
Development of over 36 in-house medication databases
Use of WHO ATC codes for duplicate medication and allergy checks
Injection orders standardized in mg or units to reduce prescribing errors
Intelligent pharmacist prescription verification enabling more in-depth and real-time pharmaceutical care
Outpatient services: 7,000 patients/day
Outpatient prescriptions: 6,000 prescriptions/day
Emergency services: 300 patients/day
Total bed capacity: 2,911 beds (2,169 general; 742 special), with an occupancy rate of 83.9%
Drug warehouse inventory: over 1,300 items
Monthly medication expenditure: approximately NT$500 million
All data are based on 2009 statistics.
After implementing the new CPOE system, physician prescribing input error rates decreased from 68.5% to 17.9%
Daily inpatient prescription cost savings exceeded NT$260,000 through system interception of duplicate medications
Following the introduction of the automated warehouse management system, dispensing error rates in the drug warehouse decreased by 82%
With computerized inventory management and resolution of supply issues, the incidence of outpatient treatment interruption due to drug shortages was reduced to 0%
Dispensing error rate reduced by 82%
Significant reduction in prescribing input errors
Inappropriate prescriptions intercepted in real time
Medication interruption rate reduced to 0%
Operational efficiency improved by 20–25%
Improved convenience for physicians in prescribing
High satisfaction with pharmacists’ operational efficiency
Increased confidence in medication safety among nursing staff
Positive feedback on system usability and ease of operation
Enhanced satisfaction with cross-departmental collaboration
First in Taiwan to implement computer-assisted IV prescription using mg (units) for injection orders
First in Taiwan to display FDA safety alerts during medication prescribing
Expiry date management: automatic verification upon receipt, prioritization of near-expiry items for dispensing, and effective monitoring of soon-to-expire medications
Automated allocation of storage locations based on storage conditions, maximizing space utilization
Wireless system-guided shelving operations with barcode location verification to ensure accurate placement
Electronic labeling supports picking processes with optimized routes, reducing reliance on staff experience
Web-based Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) system compatible with automated dispensing systems worldwide
During prescribing, injection medications are entered in mg or units, with computer-assisted input for IV diluents, volume, concentration, infusion rate, and duration, including selectable compatible diluents to reduce prescribing errors
Pioneering intelligent pharmacist prescription verification system, including dose adjustment recommendations based on renal and hepatic function
