Type 1 DM with complications or type 2 DM under insulin control and uremia after or preparing for kidney transplant.


Description

On September 19, 2003, Taipei Veterans General Hospital performed Taiwan’s first pancreas transplantation, becoming the first medical center in Taiwan to receive approval for a clinical pancreas transplantation program. The hospital was also accredited by the Department of Health to perform both pancreas procurement and transplantation procedures. Taipei Veterans General Hospital has carried out more than 80% of all pancreas transplants in Taiwan, and its patient and graft survival outcomes rank among the best in the world.

Service Data

Taipei Veterans General Hospital has performed more than 80% of all pancreas transplants in Taiwan (130 of 153 cases; 85%).

Meets the UNOS criteria for a high-volume pancreas transplant center, performing at least 10 cases per year.

From 2003 to 2026, a total of 200 pancreas transplantations have been performed at Taipei Veterans General Hospital.

Patient satisfaction rates for various general surgery service surveys have consistently exceeded 90%. Overall satisfaction with surgical care has reached 97.6%. In recent years, the overall satisfaction rate among hospitalized patients has been 100%, and patient satisfaction with nursing care has likewise remained at 100%.

Benefits and Impacts

Assisted the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) in establishing qualification criteria for pancreas transplant physicians and transplant centers in Taiwan.

Assisted the National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA) in defining the indications for pancreas transplantation in Taiwan.

Supported other medical centers in Taiwan in developing pancreas transplantation programs (e.g., first SPK at KMUH on 2014-12-31; second SPK at KMUH on 2016-07-23).

Assisted in training physicians from both domestic and international institutions. Provided nationwide clinical services across Taiwan, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, without interruption.
