The Rehabilitation and Technical Aid Center, VGHTPE has a glorious history, which has made thousands of prosthetic limbs for the injured soldiers; fabricate custom-made orthotics for an enormous number of polio patients and provide customized assistive devices for the head of state.
Therefore, the accumulated energy and the sense of vocation have made our services wider and deeper. The footprints of our services have impressed nationwide and deep into every community. We have a mission that helps all the assistive device users to rebuild hopes in their life and achieve a better future.
We are the only medical center in Taiwan that provides custom-made assistive devices, which could make our team be capable of executing maintenance service tour around whole country. Moreover, we are the only assistive devices center which has found 3-D printing department in Taiwan.
Our multidisciplinary team includes orthopedic and rehabilitation physicians, physical/occupational therapists, social workers, prosthetists/orthotists, manufacturing/maintenance technicians, and administrative staff.
We have established a comprehensive community assistive device services by five innovative features, which are: continuous sustainable care, custom-made assistive device services, resource sharing and collaborating, the development and innovation of assistive devices, nationwide maintenance service tour.
We achieved 19 SCI and 25 academic papers, alongside 2018 Red Dot and 2019 iF Design Awards.
Continuous & Sustainable Care: Taking prosthetics as an example, the duration from amputation surgery to device readiness is only about 45 days, which is 17 to over 90 days faster than the global average of 62–145 days.
Custom-made assistive device services: Providing tailored fittings based on individual needs, such as utilizing a 3D-printed post-amputation shoulder sleeve to help a youth with osteosarcoma return to the basketball court, and cross-field AT fabrication and health education for theatrical productions.
Resource sharing and collaborating: Partnering with NGOs to aid 82 underprivileged families with over NT$900,000 since 2019. Since its launch in 2016, our AT rental service has saved the government NT$12.88M and provided over 5,000 services. Charitable donations also facilitated 512 AT matchings within 5 years.
The development and innovation of assistive devices: Freely sharing COVID-19 hands-free door openers with the US Department of Veterans Affairs, establishing VR virtual AT discussion rooms, and securing 17 patents.
Nationwide maintenance service tour: Conducting 299 mobile service sessions within 5 years, recording over 10,000 visits and saving approximately NT$25M in government budget.
