Based on the goal is to save lives, caring for patients with the compassion. The palliative care ward was established in 1989. And now, 20 hospice beds were established. In January 1990, hospice home care services were set up, and in May of the same year, the hospice home care pilot project of the Department of Health was approved. In January 1991, the hospice combined care (hospice shared care) service was launched to provide appropriate care for terminally ill patients in inter-department wards. Therefore, we become the first hospital of "Hospice and Palliative Medicine Specialist Training Hospital" in central Taiwan.
Students of the "Hospice Volunteer Life Education Club" of Chung Sang Medical University cooperates with the palliative care ward. Students go from campus to the hospice ward to perform volunteer services. Student volunteers assist in clinical-related care (accompanied by nurses or senior volunteers). Students were able to assist in patient care, such as bathing, hand care, foot care, massage, etc. The festival environment decoration, hold a concert, to assist with processing of the bereaved memorials, and promotion of the concept of hospice, etc.
Students of the "Hospice Volunteer Life Education Club" of Chung Sang Medical University cooperates with the palliative care ward. Students go from campus to the hospice ward to perform volunteer services. The main feature is the club formed autonomously by students, who provide volunteer services. This is the difference from the volunteer services of domestic and foreign foundations (not the student club) and schools (not hospice model)
Since the founding of "Hospice Volunteer Life Education Club" in 1999, there are 1,010 members participating in the club, about 59 students per year. Student volunteers provided 232hours of service in this year of Sep. 2024 to Jun. 2025. This is the only one "Hospice Volunteer Life Education Club" of students in the country that provides volunteer services.
It is expected that the Hospice Volunteer Life Education Club students of Chung Sang Medical University can transfer their volunteer service experience to Humanistic care, before entering the medical workplace in the future. Through student feedback, we know that student volunteers can help patients and their families; it also provides students the opportunity to understand of holistic care of physiology, mentality, and spirituality through volunteer service. Feedback from students is as follows: It made me realize the importance of companionship in hospice care. On the winter solstice day, the nurses in the hospice ward cooked red bean porridge. They shared it with the patients and their families. The nurses, bringing warmth in the cold winter. I wrote cards to the bereaved families. I hope that through the cards, I can convey the warm power of caring words, so that they can get out of the haze of the death of their loved ones. I also deeply understand that healing others is also healing myself.
We have some measures in place to protect the rights of patients and their families, as well as considering the safety and experience of the student volunteers. Before student volunteers serving in the palliative care ward, they need to complete educational training content: 1. Palliative care presentation, core values, attitudes, volunteer roles in ward care. 2. Palliative care ward environment tour.
In the past three years, the ward volunteer service satisfaction rate has been 98.9%.
In the palliative care ward, student of the Hospice Volunteer Life Education Club learns the core values of hospice care, provide palliative care volunteer services, and promote life education and care activities continuously. There are the following special features:
No other university in the country has such a student club in operation.
Hospice Volunteer service course is provided by schools with degrees need or design projects for students to participate in services, but it is not a student club.
The main feature is the club formed autonomously by students, who provide volunteer services. Hospice Student Volunteer Service is an educational and unique innovative service.
