Intestinal failure and short bowel patients
Established the first Small Intestinal Failure Care Center in Taiwan, with special outpatient clinics and dedicated wards to provide outstanding medical care, including: (1) Innovative Same Route Catheter Replacement surgery and regular follow-up plans specially designed for patients in need of Home Parenteral Nutrition, provide personalized nutritional formulas and supplements according to each person's condition; (2) Provide Intestinal Transplant surgery alternative for those who are not suitable for intravenous nutrition due to complications, and assist in intestinal rehabilitation; (3) Providing financial assistance, psychological support, and nutrition supplement ; (4) Improving in academic research, standardizing treatment plans, and developing small intestinal regenerative medicine.
Most complete and comprehensive treatment for intestinal failure, including Home Parenteral Nutrition, Small Intestinal Transplantation, Same Route Catheter Replacement and other medical care services.
Our team has cared for 88 patients with intestinal failure from all over Taiwan and overseas; we have accumulated experience in 38 small bowel transplants from organ donors, and successfully completed 3 living donor small bowel transplant cases. 2.Through comprehensive intestinal rehabilitation and catheter care, our team reduces catheter infections and extends the lifespan of intravenous access. The five-year survival rate for intestinal failure patients reaches 81.5%, and the five-year survival rate for small bowel transplant patients reaches 71.9%.
Completed 38 cases of small intestinal transplantation, which is the largest cases number in Asia Completed three living donor intestinal transplantation in May 2024
The five-year survival rate for patients with intestinal failure reached 81.6%.
Small bowel transplantation: From 2007 to 2024, a total of 38 cases were performed, with patient survival rates of 78.9% at 1 year, 73.7% at 3 years, and 71.1% at 5 years.
All recipients of living donor small bowel transplants survived at the end of the follow-up period. All three donors also survived and recovered intestinal function, and all recipients were able to receive enteral nutrition.
Patients with intestinal failure who receive long-term home-based intravenous nutrition often experience a decline in quality of life. Our team's research shows that among intestinal failure patients using long-term home-based intravenous nutrition, 60% exhibit depressive tendencies, 73.3% have poor sleep quality, 60% have insufficient physical activity, and their overall quality of life is low. Key factors affecting quality of life include infusion duration, level of depression, and sleep quality. Therefore, our team's service effectiveness is not only measured by survival rate but also by whether patients can resume eating, return home, return to school, return to work, and reintegrate into their daily lives.
The team's research achievements encompass three main categories: medical research, questionnaire and database research, and regenerative medicine research. They have published over 40 academic papers, 3 books, and 1 patent.
Case volume and international recognition: Since the establishment of the nation's first dedicated team in 2005, the hospital has treated a total of 88 cases of intestinal failure, with patients coming from all over Taiwan, and even from Hong Kong and the Middle East, demonstrating that the hospital has become an "Intestinal Failure Center" with international influence.
