All blood donors in Taiwan and patients at approximately 800 hospitals nationwide; recipients of plasma products manufactured from source plasma
Established in 1974 with headquarters in Taipei, TBSF operates five regional blood centers (Taipei, Hsinchu, Taichung, Tainan, Kaohsiung) and around 70 fixed donation sites. Laboratory facilities include a reference laboratory, two centralized blood testing laboratories (Taipei, Kaohsiung), and six bacterial culture laboratories. Annually 1.8 million donations with 12 routine tests each generate over 20 million tests, 10 million per screening laboratory. The labs supply reagent cells for ABO and irregular antibody screening to all hospitals, provide consultation services, and maintain a centralized 7-year sample archive in Hsinchu. Since 2013, NAT combined with EIA testing for HIV/HBV/HCV has been implemented, aiming for Zero-tolerance of transfusion risk.
High-volume, automated, accurate and rapid blood screening with 20 million annual tests meeting international standards. 2. In-house reagents tailored for Taiwan-specific blood types (Mia/Dia/Del). 3. Globally first human monoclonal antibody hybridoma cell lines (Mia/Mur/MUT) and mouse mAb (M). 4. Unique Del blood typing through agglutination + elution + RhD gene 1227 site analysis. 5. NAT testing introduced in 2013 (designed for donor blood) coupled with EIA for HIV/HBV/HCV dual safeguarding. 6. Pre-collection sample diversion design - first portion of blood collected in sample bag for testing, subsequent flow for transfusion, reducing sepsis risk.
Routine testing completed by 5pm the day after donation, results transmitted to all component manufacturing units; platelet bacterial culture for 500 samples daily with reports issued by next afternoon.
8 million donors annually with 12 routine tests each, exceeding 20 million annual tests; dual-laboratory architecture provides full national redundancy.
Certified to ISO 9001/ISO 15189/PIC/S GMP/GDP; ongoing proficiency testing with CAP, NRL, ASHI and Taiwan Association of Medical Technologists.
Taipei screening lab 38 staff, Kaohsiung 34, reference lab 10, using Nanodispenser RS1000 for 10 million annual tests per lab, significantly more efficient than NTUH and Linkou CGMH which use 250 staff for 10-12 million tests.
High donor satisfaction with results accessible via email and mobile devices; hospital blood banks nationwide use TBSF's reagent cells and antisera for complete ABO/RhD/irregular antibody testing.
Adopts NAT technology in parallel with leading nations (US, UK, Japan, Australia) and leads globally in addressing Taiwan-specific blood type issues (Mia/Dia/Del); hosted the 2018 APEC Blood Supply Chain Forum.
