Description

Taipei VGH Department of Orthopedics Spine Surgery "Straighten and Reshape" Holistic Scoliosis Care Team, presented by Dr. Yu-Cheng Yao, integrates Orthopedics, Rehabilitation, Anesthesia, Radiology, Nursing, and the Disabled Reconstruction Center as Taiwan's most comprehensive scoliosis care model. 2,061 surgical cases (cumulative through 2019); surgery and outpatient volumes are #1 nationally. Five innovations: (1) Surgical technique—Taiwan-first single-stage posterior surgery replacing traditional thoracotomy with traction for large curves (IF 4.166); (2) Implant—Taiwan-only rod research changing 6.35mm to 5.5mm; (3) Precision pedicle screw—world-first improved iliac fixation with O-arm navigation ball (96% accuracy; 100% with 3D-printed surgical guides post-2016); (4) Infection reduction—world-first povidone-iodine wound irrigation; deep infection 0% (vs Johns Hopkins 2.7%); 366 paper citations; (5) Patents—minimally invasive distractible spinal fixator. 2015 established Taiwan's only primary scoliosis whole-genome library, identifying 6 Taiwan-specific gene loci. 10-year follow-up: complications 2.16% (vs intl 2.60%); SRR-22 satisfaction matches intl standards. Co-founded Taiwan Scoliosis Care Association, 30+ public outreach events influencing 3,000+ people.
