Description

Chung Shan Medical University Hospital's Pediatric Hematology team, led by Director Kang-Hsi Wu, has established a dedicated pediatric haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation ward, with parents or first-degree relatives as donors, solving the traditional challenge of finding HLA-matched donors. The team pioneered the world-first combined use of antithymocyte globulin (ATG) plus post-transplant cyclophosphamide (PTCy) for GVHD prophylaxis, and was Asia's first to use defibrotide for veno-occlusive disease. Standardized protocols include pre-transplant SDM matching, individualized care plans, ATG/PTCy GVHD prophylaxis, letermovir CMV prevention, and ruxolitinib for aGVHD. Cumulative 178 BMT cases, 27 pediatric haploidentical transplants (most in Taiwan; 71% of national 38 cases across 6 hospitals). Engraftment 100%, severe GVHD 0%, chronic GVHD 0%, viral infection mortality 0%. Helped Indonesia complete its first two HSCTs; trained 10+ Southeast Asian physicians.

Pediatric Haploidentical Stem Cell Transplant

Children needing an allogeneic bone marrow transplant must undergo matching. If a fully compatible donor isn't found, a haploidentical transplant is the best option.
