Target Population

We provide glaucoma screening, early diagnosis, and comprehensive treatment for the general public to improve early detection and preserve long-term visual function.

Description

Our hospital provides comprehensive glaucoma care and actively accepts referrals from primary care hospitals and clinics in New Taipei City. We manage a wide range of conditions, including primary open-angle glaucoma, primary angle-closure glaucoma, and secondary glaucomas such as cataract-related glaucoma, neovascular glaucoma, and acute angle-closure glaucoma presenting with elevated intraocular pressure and optic nerve damage. In addition, a 24-hour glaucoma emergency service is available, enabling prompt diagnosis and immediate treatment planning for acute attacks. For diagnosis, we integrate optical coherence tomography (OCT) with microvascular imaging systems to provide in vivo cross-sectional evaluation of the optic nerve and macula, significantly improving early detection and diagnostic accuracy of glaucoma. In terms of treatment, we offer various laser therapies, including laser peripheral iridotomy and laser iridoplasty for angle-closure glaucoma, as well as selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) for open-angle glaucoma. For surgical management, in addition to conventional trabeculectomy and cyclodestructive procedures, we have introduced minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), offering two types of micro-shunt devices. These advanced surgical options aim to enhance safety, reduce invasiveness, and improve postoperative recovery outcomes.

Key Highlights

  • Since 2021, our hospital has utilized an integrated glaucoma optic nerve reporting system that combines longitudinal visual field and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) data into trend analyses, enabling efficient monitoring of disease progression and supporting clinical decision-making.

  • The hospital was the first in New Taipei City to introduce Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), expanding treatment options for open-angle glaucoma beyond medications and conventional surgery. We continue to advance glaucoma care through the adoption of minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), novel drainage devices, and micropulse laser technologies. In 2020, we became the first center in New Taipei City to perform MIGS and offer multiple micro-shunt devices, improving surgical safety and postoperative recovery.

  • To further strengthen management of refractory glaucoma, the Paul Glaucoma Implant was introduced in late 2022 and formally adopted in 2023. In pharmacologic therapy, we introduced Eybelis in 2023, a novel PGE2 receptor agonist that effectively lowers intraocular pressure while reducing periocular side effects, enhancing patient tolerance and treatment adherence. Together, these innovations demonstrate our commitment to advanced, patient-centered glaucoma care.

Service Data

  • Over the past three years, our team has provided care to more than 40,000 patients. The annual outpatient volume was 15,396 in 2022, 14,634 in 2023, and 15,042 in 2024, demonstrating stable and consistent clinical service capacity.

  • In terms of diagnostic workload, optical coherence tomography (OCT) examinations consistently exceeded 17,000 cases per year, with 20,335 in 2022, 26,373 in 2023, and 26,538 in 2024, showing a continuous upward trend. Visual field testing also demonstrated steady growth, with 4,174 cases in 2022, 4,536 in 2023, and 4,881 in 2024.

  • Regarding treatment volume, glaucoma laser therapy maintained more than 250 cases annually, with 366 cases in 2022, 331 in 2023, and 325 in 2024. Glaucoma-related surgical procedures accounted for approximately 100 to 130 cases per year, with 117 cases in 2021, 115 in 2022, 127 in 2023, and 134 in 2024, reflecting stable surgical service capacity.

  • In academic and research activities, our team regularly conducts teaching programs and presented five posters and oral presentations at ophthalmology conferences in 2024. We also actively engage in multiple clinical studies on glaucoma, contributing to a deeper understanding of disease mechanisms and continuous improvement of treatment strategies.

Featured Outcomes

Trabeculectomy was applied in patients with severe glaucoma

  • Study population: mean preoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) >25 mmHg

  • Mean IOP reduction of 68% on postoperative day 1

  • Approximately 56% reduction maintained at 3 months postoperatively

  • Demonstrates significant and stable IOP-lowering effect

  • Provides sustained clinical benefit in IOP control Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)

  • Demonstrates overall favorable intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction ˙May reduce the need for trabeculectomy surgery

  • Primary open-angle glaucoma Mean IOP reduction of 15.5% at 6 months Mean IOP reduction of 13.0% at 12 months

  • Postoperative angle-closure glaucoma after cataract surgery Mean IOP reduction of 12.6% at 6 months Mean IOP reduction of 21.5% at 12 months

  • Effective across different glaucoma subtypes

  • Demonstrates good long-term therapeutic outcomes

Safety Outcomes

  • Biannual quality audits and evaluations are conducted, covering standardized operating procedures for all examinations and surgical workflows.

  • The implementation rate of standardized operating procedures (SOPs) reaches 100%, ensuring consistency across all screening processes.

Satisfaction

Our glaucoma treatments and health education events have been highly recognized by the public, yielding the following outcomes:

  • High Satisfaction: The 2022 "Glaucoma Health Week" achieved a 97% satisfaction rate (763 participants), with zero dissatisfaction reported.

  • Positive Feedback: Participants highlighted improved disease awareness, and expressed high satisfaction with the comprehensive eye screenings and enthusiastic staff services.

  • Official Recognition: Our physicians were highly praised by patients and families, earning 4 hospital-level Certificates of Merit and Appreciation between 2021 and 2023.

International Achievements

  • Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is primarily indicated for primary open-angle glaucoma in international research and clinical practice.

  • Our team has expanded its application to angle-closure glaucoma patients.

  • This includes cases with uncontrolled intraocular pressure after cataract surgery.

  • The treated group achieved an average IOP reduction of approximately 13% to 20%.

  • This demonstrates significant clinical efficacy and therapeutic benefit.

  • This novel application is rarely reported and may represent a first in the international literature.

  • It highlights strong research originality and clinical value.

  • Overall, it demonstrates our leadership and innovation in glaucoma management and clinical research.

Benefits and Impacts

Our glaucoma team is dedicated to advancing clinical excellence, innovation, and evidence-based care. In severe glaucoma patients (preoperative IOP >25 mmHg), trabeculectomy achieved a 68% IOP reduction on postoperative day 1 and maintained approximately 56% reduction at 3 months. Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) also demonstrated sustained efficacy in primary open-angle glaucoma, with IOP reductions of 15.5% at 6 months and 13.0% at 12 months.

Expanding beyond conventional indications, we applied SLT to angle-closure glaucoma patients with uncontrolled IOP after cataract surgery. This novel approach achieved 13–20% IOP reduction, providing important evidence for broader glaucoma management and cross-subtype treatment strategies.

SLT offers effective IOP control while reducing the need for subsequent trabeculectomy, providing a safer, less invasive option that enhances patient quality of life and satisfaction. Its application in post-cataract angle-closure glaucoma remains rarely reported internationally and represents a promising treatment innovation.

By reducing invasive surgical demand and optimizing healthcare resource utilization, our work supports both medical sustainability and system efficiency. These clinical and research achievements demonstrate leadership in glaucoma innovation and contribute to the advancement of modern glaucoma care.
