Description

Guided by the mission of "Embracing Constant Change to Fulfill an Unchanging Mission" the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Taipei Veterans General Hospital established a smart laboratory model integrating innovation, sustainability, resilience, and patient-centered quality.

Operating Taiwan’s largest fully automated track laboratory system, it seamlessly merges specimen transport, processing, testing, verification, archiving, and monitoring. Digital integration and real-time surveillance transform conventional workflows into a highly automated, data-driven platform.

Prioritizing patient safety, the department delivers outstanding quality: 99.99985% patient ID accuracy, 99.99998% safe specimen delivery, 99.9999% report accuracy, 100% critical value notification, and 92% automated verification. Patient and physician satisfaction exceed 98%, reflecting exceptional clinical reliability.

Championing sustainability, the lab uses 100% paperless workflows and integrated testing for 77% of items, saving 176 trees, cutting 26.3 metric tons of carbon emissions yearly, and boosting per capita productivity by 37%.

During COVID-19, the department demonstrated high resilience by supporting 11 national screening missions, running 430,000+PCR tests, and establishing pathogen sequencing platforms. Moving forward, it continues advancing precision medicine via aligned NGS and molecular diagnostics, acting as a backbone for smart healthcare, public health, and personalized medicine.
