Patients with olfactory disorders
The Smell Center of Department of Otolaryngology at Taichung Veterans General Hospital is the only center certified by Bureau of Labor Insurance, Ministry of Labor for examination and appraisal of olfactory disability. .After introducing the first set of olfactory test equipment from the University of Pennsylvania, the current olfactory tests include Smell Threshold Test, University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test, et al. We modified the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test as the traditional Chinese version of University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test to facilitate its application in Taiwan. About 1000 patients have been tested in our center every year. Now we have continued to develop new test methods, such as olfactory resolution test developed by the Rockefeller University, USA and olfactory positron emission tomography-computed tomography. The Center is ongoing research across teams, for example, schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease-related research cooperated with psychiatrists and neurologists. We also studied different treatment strategies for olfactory dysfunction, and explored the influence of olfactory dysfunction in the quality of life of patients in order to reduce social costs generated by the loss of the sense of smell.

The center has published 26 papers related to olfactory medicine in domestic and international journals, making it the center with the most published papers in this field in Taiwan.
The center's revised "Traditional Chinese version of the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test" is now widely used in various departments of hospitals across Taiwan.
As the first olfactory center in Taiwan, it serves the largest number of patients and treats the widest range of diseases.
Approximately 1,000 patients are examined annually.
Olfactory threshold testing is used, and various olfactory testing instruments are replaced regularly to ensure they are within their effective lifespan.
During the examination, patients are monitored for any discomfort and adverse events are noted. A very small number of patients experience temporary dizziness due to intolerance to the odors used in the examination.
Only a small number of patients cannot tolerate MRI scans due to their own physical condition.
A satisfaction survey was conducted among 130 patients who underwent olfactory function testing.
Patients were generally satisfied with the doctors' explanations of their conditions.
Patients were also satisfied with the service attitude of the technicians.
3.1% of patients were not satisfied with the "waiting time for the examination".
