Description

The Department of Clinical Pathology has adopted “ESG-CECOR: Agile Resilience, Innovative Sustainability” as its vision to build a smart clinical laboratory integrating testing quality, personnel safety, environmental responsibility, and social value.

Environmentally, equipment upgrades, workflow optimization, consumable management, waste reduction, and energy-saving measures reduced annual carbon emissions by 11,796.75 kg CO₂e and biomedical waste by 8.79%, supporting SDGs 7, 12, and 13.

Socially, the department promotes rural home healthcare, hepatitis prevention, community health education, and preventive care, expanding service accessibility for elderly and vulnerable populations and supporting SDGs 3, 10, and 17.

In governance, it published the first laboratory ESG sustainability report, integrating quality management, risk control, data monitoring, PDCA improvement, and SDG-based performance disclosure to strengthen data-driven decision-making and stakeholder trust.

Key Highlights

  • The Medical Laboratory ESG Sustainability Report deeply integrates clinical laboratory quality management with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), transforming them into a business strategy with quantifiable indicators.

  • We have fully quantified the carbon emission differences of the laboratory, implementing lean medical processes with the goal of energy conservation and carbon reduction.

  • The Clinical Pathology Department has pioneered home-based medical services and received the Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards (TSAA) Gold and Silver tiers for two consecutive years, extending services beyond hospital walls to deep rural areas to achieve health equity.

Service Data

  • Successfully conducted a comprehensive quantification of the laboratory's carbon footprint pre- and post-renovation, achieving a calculated reduction of 20.9% in carbon emissions.

  • Provided healthcare services to 87 vulnerable elderly individuals in 2024, leading to the identification and referral of one patient with malignant lymphoma for hospital treatment.

Featured Outcomes

  • The prevalence of healthcare-associated multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) across the hospital decreased from 29.5% to 17.6%

  • The laboratory's Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for infectious waste (Total Mass/Test Frequency) was successfully reduced from 8.8g to 8.6g.

  • The achievement rate of the 12 ESG strategic indicators reached 100% in 2024.

Safety Outcomes

  • The incident rate of quality indicator abnormalities from 4 cases per month to 1 case per month.

  • The frequency of specimen recollection for emergency coagulation tests was significantly decreased from 75 cases per month to 19 cases per month. 3.Achieved a 0% specimen loss rate in 2024.

Satisfaction

  • The laboratory's internal employee satisfaction rate increased from 76.3% to 82.5%.

  • Satisfaction ratings from clinical medical units regarding laboratory services improved from 82.78% to 87.7%.

International Achievements

  • Published four journal articles regarding the application of diagnostic technologies for COVID-19 and HCV detection, as well as the utilize of gas chromatography for rapid toxicological analysis in emergency care.

  • Exhibited research on stress testing for the sub-health population at the 2024 Taiwan Healthcare+ Expo, successfully attracting international media coverage and interviews.

  • In 2025, the department presented its improvement outcomes at the IHF World Hospital Congress.

Benefits and Impacts

  • Authored the world's first Medical Laboratory ESG Sustainability Report, utilizing its ESG strategic framework to significantly enhance laboratory reporting turnaround times and clinical operational efficiency.

  • Leveraged laboratory-led initiatives to actively support the hospital's transition toward comprehensive low-carbon medical governance and sustainable management.

  • The multidisciplinary and industry–academic collaboration with National Sun Yat-sen University has become a model for innovative resource integration among hospitals in Taiwan.
