Elderly individuals in northern Taiwan
Sarcopenia refers to a syndrome characterized by decreased muscle mass and strength in older adults, leading to a decline in physical function. It can result in disability, higher hospitalization rates, and increased mortality. The Sarcopenia and Frailty Research Team at NTU Hospital Beihu Branch focuses on elderly individuals undergoing health check-ups, providing assessments of body composition, musculoskeletal function, nutrition, and physical activity. The team, coined as “Taiwan Number 1 project”, has developed an evidence-based model for sarcopenia screening and treatment since 2016. The members are composed of physicians, therapists, social workers, and nurses. We provided add-on assessments and offer exercise and nutrition recommendations or clinic referrals based on established procedures. Results showed high satisfaction, safety, and a sarcopenia recovery rate of 84%, along with positive societal feedback. Some of these assessments have been included in the Taipei City Elderly Health Check-up C Package in 2025

Screening for sarcopenia: 7,438 participants.
Treatment of sarcopenia: 57 participants.
The recovery rate for sarcopenia is 84%, with an average increase in skeletal muscle index of 0.37 kg/m² and an average improvement in grip strength of 2.89 kg.
By adopting the latest diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia (AWGS 2019), we proved that the prevalence of sarcopenia among the elderly in northern Taiwan ranges from 11% to 17%.
We promote sarcopenia awareness through various tools, including books, publications, YouTube, news, podcasts, invited lectures, exhibitions, and seminars.
